This was an initiative driven by local skaters who lobbied their councilors. Once built, the Whangarei skatepark was considered one of the best facilities of its size in New Zealand. The design was largely driven by the young men (and one woman) seeking the park, but was also influenced by our research into other New Zealand skateparks and international examples. Whilst primarily aimed at skateboards, and catering for a range of skills, we were keen to ensure that it was versatile to cater for other types of users. And so it has proven to be, with bikers, inline skates and scooters commonly seen on the park. Littoralis have also assisted with the design of skateparks for Kaikohe, Hikurangi and Ngunguru.
